Height: Most living rooms can handle a lamp that is 26 to 34 inches tall. The hardware should not be visible to someone sitting in a chair. The bottom of the shade should be about even with a persons cheekbone when sitting on a chair and the lights beam should fall on the page when reading.
Now this crystal table lamp with a contemporary crystal-like shade is very unique and modern. It certainly is the complete opposite of the antique lamps we just looked at above! This lamp is has a chandelier style lighting from the 3 glass "lamp shades". It has a slim stem and a round base to give it plenty of support. It is made of acrylic and steel, and the manufacturer says it is easy to assemble. It uses normal 40-watt chandelier bulbs which you should be able to get at any hardware store. I am not sure exactly what kind of lighting this lamp provides, but it sure is one of the most unique, elegant, and contemporary table lamps available!
Lampshades: In general, drum shades look more modern and conical ones look more traditional. The diameter of the lampshade should never extend beyond the edge of the table.
Third, ask yourself if you can live with a particular lamp style over time. Some lamps are distinctive and may look interesting in a store. However, oddly-shaped or with protruding angles, some lamps unique style can quickly wear out their welcome. Remember, you will see it every day. If you grow tired of looking at it, the lamp is likely not doing its job. Take the time to consider how you will feel about your lamp 5 years from now.
Bulk: If the table lamp needs to assist in visually anchoring an area - then a lamp with more bulk or visual weight such as a pottery jar lamp may be the most appropriate. Table lamps should not compete with the overall design of the room - rather compliment it.
